Mind Manipulation Techniques: 3 Ways to Protect Yourself

Whether you know how to persuade people or not, this article will show you how to protect yourself from a devious kind of persuasion - and that is mind manipulation.

If you think that mind manipulation techniques are only being applied in movies and interrogation rooms, think again. It's something that can easily infiltrate your everyday life. You might experience it from work, school or even while you're out buying groceries at the supermarket.

Granted, being manipulated to buy chicken instead of beef might not sound like such a big deal, but what about bullying in school or at work? These mind manipulation techniques often get worse as time goes by.

Unless you take action and protect yourself, these situations might eventually lead to harmful effects on your mental, emotional and physical health!

Protection Tip # 1: Be Aware.

Francis Bacon said that knowledge is power. And he's definitely right about this one. By arming yourself with information or by just being aware of mind manipulation tactics, you are already protecting yourself!

How else can you solve a problem if you don't even know there is one to begin with? Honestly, just being where you are right now and reading this article already sends you three or four steps ahead of your problem!

Protection Tip # 2: Stick to Your Guns.

This really isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. Sometimes, you just can't help but be swayed by other people. However, know that once you resist the urge to follow someone else's lead, it will all be worth it.

You will get the feeling of overcoming something huge and you'll even see yourself in a new light, which in turn, will only serve to empower you more. This isn't the same as being highly stubborn, mind you.

Protection Tip # 3: Build Yourself Up.

Targets of mind manipulation techniques are oftentimes those who do not really have a lot of confidence in themselves.

If you have much insecurity, other people will just try to use your lack of self-confidence to control you.

For example, if you're someone who cares a lot about your appearance, another person can easily say something to trigger a reaction from you.

In order to prevent being victimized by such tactics, make sure you're comfortable with who you are. Look for all your good points instead of dwelling on your not-so-good characteristics. Be grateful for all the great things happening in your life.

Don't let mind manipulation techniques get to you. Moving to a new school or leaving your job isn't the solution to your problem. Running away won't help you get anywhere. All you get is a change of environment but not a change of mindset. Just remember to be alert on your toes, be firm with your decisions and believe in yourself!

Mariano "Mike" Zuniega Velarde or better known as Bro. Mike Velarde (born August 20, 1939) is the founder and Servant Leader of the Philippine based Catholic Charismatic religious group El Shaddai Movement which has a following of an estimated three to seven million Filipinos.

He is the owner of Amvel Land Development Corporation, a real estate company and Delta Broadcasting System, an AM Band Radio station (DWXI 1314KHz).

Saved for a purpose

The turning point of his life was sometime in February 1978, When at the age of 38, Bro. Mike was scheduled for major surgery due to heart enlargement and heart block at the Philippine Heart Centre. However, none of his 5 doctors could guarantee that he would survive the operation. For 3 weeks he lay on his hospital bed- downhearted, hopeless and fearful for a heart attack. Then one night at one hour past midnight, an angel of the Lord in the guise of a nurse came to his room and said: "Mike Velarde, I've been watching you for the past three weeks. You're down and worried for fear of heart attack. But if you will allow me, I'll open that Bible besides you and show a way out of your predicament.

Just read it over and over again and I assure you, it will help." She then opened the Bible to 1 Corinthians 10:13 saying thus:"No temptation has overtaken you that are not common to man. And God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your strength. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out that you can stand up under it." Bro. Mike read it again and again, just as he had been told. Then he prayed thus: "God, if am going to die now, please forgive me for the sins I' eve committed all these years. However if this is just but a test, restore my courage and strength to live." After that simple prayer, Bro. Mike saw a Man hanging on a cross with blood flowing down from His side saying, "Come unto Me!" His fear completely melted, peace enveloped his whole being and he slept soundly that night.

The following day, he woke up with renewed strength and joy, and with a new life! The doctors were surprised to find Bro. Mike up from his bed - walking along the corridors of the hospital with a new vigour. After a week-long thorough test, he was discharged from the hospital with a clean bill of health. Thus the scheduled surgery was cancelled. God Almighty performed a very special heart transplant in Bro. Mike!

From that time on, his desire and ambitions changed. The word of God that was planted in his heart bloomed. He started to seek God Who miraculously healed him at the hospital by attending charismatic movement prayer meetings which were then held at first class hotels. Being a devout Catholics, Bro. Mike desired to share his experience of the miracle-working power of God's Word to his brothers and sisters within the catholic faith where he had received his baptism and confirmation.

Preaching Style

His preaching style is no different from typical prosperity gospel-driven Pentecostal televangelists. His brand of Catholic Charismatic-style prosperity gospel theology captures the masses from which most of his followings come. It promises God's financial and physical blessings to all provided that they remain faithful in attendance to gatherings, giving their tithes and offerings, and obedience. Part of Velarde's practical theology is the use of certain inanimate items such as handkerchiefs, umbrellas and even eggs as channels of God's power. Part of their regular meetings is lifting up and praying over bankbooks, checkbooks, purses and billfolds in hopes of heaven filling them with money. Such practices are not foreign to Filipino indigenous and folk religion. Thus, Velarde's brand of Catholic Charismaticism is highly acceptable to a majority of Filipinos.

I Left My Meeting With Mike Velarde A Changed Man

I had a special blessing from God this morning.
I spent 3 beautiful, spiritually enriching hours with Bro. Mike Velarde, Founder of El Shaddai. (Thanks to my friend Chona Velasco for linking us together.)
I know. When some people think of Bro. Mike, they think of him only as that funny TV preacher with an accent wearing a red bowtie who makes his audience jump up and invert their umbrellas under the rain.
Don’t be fooled. God is using him to bless the world in a mighty way. You may not agree with his style, his accent, his wardrobe, or even his theology—but millions are drawn to God because of him.
Believe me, I can’t express how much he inspired me this morning.
Finally, I now know why millions gather at his feet every Saturday night (either physically or through his Radio and TV broadcast) to listen to him.
It was Cardinal Sin who asked Bro. Mike in one Luneta Grandstand El Shaddai prayer rally, “What do you have that I don’t have? I can’t draw this crowd, but you can.” His answer to the Cardinal: “This is pure grace from God, your Eminence.”
And I experienced that powerful grace this morning.
As he spoke to me, telling me simple stories of faith, I felt drawn to the Lord. I wanted to trust God more, to serve God more, and to love God more. That was the effect he had on me. And yes, the same effect on millions of others.

But let me summarize what I learned from Bro. Mike:
1) People need to know that God cares for us—body, soul, and spirit
Bro. Mike believes that God is interested not only with our spiritual needs, but also with our next meal. He cares for our material and physical needs as well. This comes out in his talks. I use a different approach, but I totally agree with him and preach in the same way.
2) People need rest in God’s Presence
He told me that the only time he heard God’s audible voice was when God told him, “Build a center where my people can rest.” At first, he thought it was a physical center. So he designed it, even had the Pope bless the plans, even had Cardinal Sin in the groundbreaking ceremony—but soon, he realized it wasn’t a physical center. It was El Shaddai where people would get their rest. Because the crowd would never fit any enclosed building anymore! Here’s what I picked him from him: From a very tiring week of work, people need to go to happy place with God. And that’s what happens in El Shaddai—people go home from these meetings refreshed and happy. I’ve noticed that my gatherings (The FEAST) have the same effect in people too. Church should be a place of rest and joy!
3) You need simple faith to do His work
Bro. Mike has a simple faith. I feel that it’s because of this simple faith that he can do all that he does. I need to cultivate this kind of faith in God if I want to be used more by Him. Sometimes, I get too complicated. I need to learn from him.
4) Be generous if you want to succeed in life
Bro. Mike is extremely generous. At one point in 1981, he gave his seed money (P50,000) to fund a huge charismatic gathering. He wasn’t preaching yet at that time. He just gave away his money. Until God asked him to form El Shaddai. I believe God is blessing him because of his generosity.
5) Love people—like really!
Bro. Mike loves people from the heart. I felt it. He welcomes both the poor and the rich in his office. Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Senators, and Generals seek his advice almost everyday. But in that same room, he also welcomes the poor, the sick, and terminally ill who need his prayer.

Bro. Mike Velarde is already 67 years old, but doesn’t look like it at all.
He still jogs everyday. Even when he travels, he sees to it that his hotel is beside a park for his daily exercise.
After 28 years of serving God, I asked him, “Do you ever feel tired?”
He smiled, “I feel that it’s just my first day with the Lord. I feel like I’m still 18.”
ut he also explained to me his weekly regimen, which is very sensible.
On Mondays and Wednesdays, he does his business—which is real estate. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, he does his ministry work. On Fridays and Saturdays, he hides in Tagaytay to pray and prepare his weekly talk. On Saturday night, he delivers that talk to a massive crowd in El Shaddai. On Sunday, he rests at home—totally drained by the work he did the night before.
He adds, “Life is a choice. We can choose to be miserable, or we can choose to be happy in the midst of miserable circumstances.” I had to laugh. We almost use the exact words! It was as though I was hearing myself preach.
Hey, I’ve got to stop writing now. It’s 11:20pm and I’ve got sleep.
I have four meetings tomorrow. (Tell you about it.)
